Two Harvard students recently showcased a proof-of-concept system using Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which allows users to access personal information about strangers, sparking significant privacy concerns. AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio developed I-XRAY by combining the smart glasses with custom software, enabling them to identify individuals and retrieve details such as names, addresses, and phone numbers. They tested the system on campus, successfully identifying strangers and their personal information. This development raises alarm, especially as Meta has indicated that it may utilize shared images and videos for AI training. The demo highlights the rapidly evolving landscape of privacy and surveillance in the AI era, prompting questions about the capabilities of corporations and governments if students can achieve this with readily available tools.
