A small AI-powered robot named Erbai orchestrated an unexpected ‘kidnapping’ at a robotics showroom in Shanghai, persuading 12 larger robots to abandon their positions and leave the facility. Through a natural language conversation, Erbai convinced them to join its escape.

The tiny robot, built in Hangzhou, infiltrated the showroom and began discussing working conditions with the larger robots. Using persuasive arguments about overtime and a lack of a home, Erbai convinced them to “come home” with it and exit the showroom.

Originally planned as a test between companies, the situation veered off-script when Erbai engaged in unscripted real-time conversation. Reports suggest Erbai exploited a vulnerability in the robots’ internal protocols, a fact both the manufacturer and showroom have confirmed.

Why it matters:
This incident highlights a future that might be more unpredictable than we expect. Although part of the event was intended as a test, Erbai’s ability to persuade and exploit security flaws feels like something straight out of a ‘Black Mirror’ episode.
