Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, has announced the development of an "AI Phone" in collaboration with Perplexity, marking one of the first major carrier-led efforts to create a smartphone designed specifically for AI experiences.

The device will feature Perplexity Assistant at its core, which will be directly accessible from the lock screen, eliminating the need to switch between apps.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas described the partnership as transforming their technology from an “answer machine to an action machine” capable of handling everyday tasks.

The phone will also integrate AI-powered services like Google Cloud AI for real-time translation, ElevenLabs for podcast creation, and Picsart for generating avatars.

The device is expected to launch later this year, priced under $1,000, with DT also introducing an app version of its Magenta AI starting this summer.

Why it matters: While tech giants have only recently begun incorporating AI into existing phones (with mixed results), this marks a significant move toward shifting mobile experiences from app-based interfaces to more proactive, AI-driven assistants.
