AI DEVELOPMENT
Ex-OpenAI CTO Takes on the AI Industry with New Rival Lab

Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, has officially launched Thinking Machines Lab, a new AI research company. The lab’s mission is to make AI systems more "widely understood, customizable, and generally capable" by promoting open science.
Key points:
Thinking Machines aims to develop cutting-edge models centered on science and programming, with a focus on human-AI collaboration and multimodality.
Murati has assembled an impressive team, including OpenAI veterans John Schulman and Barret Zoph, as well as experts from DeepMind, Character AI, and Mistral.
The company is committed to open science and plans to regularly release technical papers, code, datasets, and model specifications.
The launch comes just six months after Murati left OpenAI “to create time and space for her own exploration.”
Why it matters: Murati’s move positions her as the latest former OpenAI leader to launch a competing lab, following in the footsteps of Ilya Sutskever’s SSI, which is reportedly raising $1B+. The lab’s highly skilled team could establish it as a major new force in AI, and its commitment to open science could drive the industry toward a more open-source approach.
