Is ChatGPT Available for Calls or WhatsApp Chats?

On the 10th Day of OpenAI, the company announced that ChatGPT now has a dedicated phone number (1-800-242-8478 / 1-800-ChatGPT), allowing users to call or message it via WhatsApp. Users can ask questions and receive answers either through a voice call or text, accessible from both landlines and smartphones.

Key Points:

In a demo, OpenAI showcased the feature using an iPhone, though older models and even rotary phones are also supported. For example, during a road trip, users can call ChatGPT to inquire about local landmarks and attractions.

ChatGPT can also translate text into multiple languages. On WhatsApp, users can text ChatGPT for various information, like a recipe, and receive a plain-text response (with images and web search capabilities coming soon).

There’s no cost for calling ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes per month on a phone plan. OpenAI has confirmed that no data from voice calls or WhatsApp messages will be used to train its models.

Why It Matters: Recently, OpenAI has introduced features like a search engine, Canvas for refining writing and coding, and Projects for organizing chats. These additions target less technical users and align with their mission to make artificial general intelligence beneficial to all. This new calling and texting feature is a step toward making AI more accessible to everyone.
