Is Google Using Claude to Boost Gemini's Performance?

Google is utilizing Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, to enhance the performance of its own AI model, Gemini, by having a team of contractors compare the outputs from both models to determine which one performs better.

Key Points:

• Contractors are shown responses from both models to a user prompt and have 30 minutes to evaluate them, focusing on truthfulness, verbosity, and determining which response is superior.

• The contractors only realized they were comparing Gemini’s responses to Claude’s after noticing references like “I am Claude, created by Anthropic” in some of the responses.

• Contractors also noted that Claude’s safety settings were considered “the strictest” among AI models, as it refused to respond to "unsafe" prompts, while Gemini did and was flagged as a “huge safety violation.”

Why it matters: Anthropic’s user agreement prohibits using Claude to “build a competing product or service” or to “train competing AI models” without approval. However, since Google is a major investor in Anthropic, it’s unclear if this restriction applies to them. While Google hasn’t confirmed whether it has permission to use Claude in this way, they have denied claims that they have used Anthropic’s models to train Gemini.
