Nvidia's New Blackwell GPU Set to Replace Banned H20 in China

In response to escalating U.S.-China trade tensions and stricter export restrictions, Nvidia is reportedly developing a lower-cost version of its flagship Blackwell AI GPU in an effort to preserve its presence in the Chinese market.

What’s happening:
According to Reuters, the new Blackwell-based chip is slated to enter mass production in June, effectively succeeding the China-focused H20 model, which was built on Nvidia’s Hopper architecture.

The upcoming GPU is expected to be derived from the RTX Pro 6000D, a server-grade GPU featuring approximately 1.7TB/s of GDDR7 memory bandwidth — significantly less than the H20’s 4TB/s.

To ensure compliance and reduce cost, the chip comes with scaled-down specifications and a more accessible price point, estimated between $6,500 and $8,000, compared to the H20’s $10,000–$12,000.

Nvidia has not officially confirmed the chip, stating that its operations in China remain “foreclosed” until a new design is finalized and cleared by U.S. regulators.

Why it matters:
This move signals Nvidia’s attempt to stay active in the world’s second-largest AI market without breaching U.S. export laws. However, while a compliant, budget-friendly GPU may help Nvidia maintain short-term relevance, it may not be enough to secure long-term dominance — particularly as domestic players like Huawei continue to accelerate their AI infrastructure efforts.
