Omi's Revolutionary Mind-Reading AI Wearable: The Future of Personal Technology
Based Hardware has unveiled Omi, an $89 AI wearable that merges continuous listening with brain-interface technology to assist with productivity tasks — with aspirations of developing mind-reading capabilities in the future.
Key Features:
Omi can be worn as a necklace or attached to the temple, offering early brain-interface functionality that detects when the AI is addressed without needing a wake word.
The device continuously listens, providing real-time summaries, meeting notes, and contextual information, and boasts a battery life of about 3 days.
Taking an open-source approach, the company already offers over 250 apps in its store and integrates AI models from OpenAI and Meta.
While the current brain-interface functionality is limited to intent detection, the founder envisions more advanced thought-reading capabilities within two years.
Originally named ‘Friend,’ Omi rebranded after a device with the same name launched. Founder Nik Shevchenko even released a diss track claiming his version as "the real friend."
Why It Matters: Physical AI wearables have struggled to maintain momentum beyond the initial hype. However, as models improve, these devices could offer greater value to users. That said, convincing consumers to adapt to new habits — especially with concerns about privacy and the inconvenience of attaching a device to the head — remains a significant challenge.

AI FUN FACT
DID YOU KNOW?
AI can recognize and generate jokes, but it doesn’t “get” them the way humans do. For example, an AI can identify the structure of a pun or a play on words and even generate a joke, but it doesn’t have the emotional or cultural context that makes humor funny to people. Humor often relies on shared experiences, subtle timing, and complex emotions—elements that AI can mimic but doesn't truly understand!
