Google has just launched the Open Buildings 2.5D Temporal Dataset, an AI-driven tool that monitors building changes in the Global South from 2016 to 2023, providing estimates of building presence, counts, and heights.
Key Details:
- The dataset spans an area of 32 million square miles across Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia, utilizing 10m resolution imagery from Sentinel-2 satellites.
- It employs an innovative AI method that combines multiple low-resolution satellite images to achieve near high-resolution accuracy in building detection and height estimation.
- This tool is intended to support urban planning, crisis response, and environmental impact assessments in regions that lack current infrastructure data.
- Despite its strengths, the dataset has some limitations, such as challenges in collecting data in areas with frequent cloud cover and difficulties in detecting very small structures.
Why It Matters: Google is making significant strides with its new models aimed at addressing real-world challenges. Just yesterday, the tech giant was using AI to communicate with whales, and now it's applying this technology to enhance city development and mitigate environmental disasters.
